Privacy policy

This policy explains how I collect, use and protect personal information sent through peternorris.ca. Legal services are provided through George Murray Shipley Bell, LLP, and the firm’s own privacy practices also apply to information about clients and their files.

What I collect

• Information you send through the forms on this site, such as your name, email address, phone number and what you tell me about your matter.

• For the Send a deal forms, details of the transaction and any documents that are uploaded, such as an agreement of purchase and sale or a lender commitment.

• For the newsletter, your name and email address.

• Basic technical information collected by the website platform, such as the pages visited, the type of browser and an approximate location, through cookies and similar tools.

How I use it

• To respond to your enquiry, prepare a quote and run a conflict check.

• To open and manage your file if you become a client.

• To send the newsletter you signed up for. Every email includes a link to unsubscribe.

• To understand how the site is used and to improve it.

I do not sell personal information.

Who sees it

• The lawyers and staff at George Murray Shipley Bell, LLP who need it to respond to you or to work on your file.

• The service providers that host this website and its forms (Squarespace) and send the newsletter (Mailchimp). These providers may store information outside Canada, including in the United States, where it is subject to the laws of that country.

• Anyone else only with your consent, or where the law requires it.

Before you are a client

Sending me information through this site does not make you a client. Please do not send confidential details until I have confirmed that I can act for you. Until then, I may not be able to keep what you send confidential, for example if I already act for someone whose interests are opposed to yours.

How long I keep it

Enquiries that do not become files are deleted once they are no longer needed. Client files are kept for as long as the Law Society of Ontario and the law require.

Your choices

You can ask to see or correct the personal information I hold about you, or stop receiving the newsletter, by emailing pnorris@gmsb.ca. If you have a concern about how your information has been handled, you can also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
